Analysis Of College Magazine Cover
Language: The masthead is two parted, as it is not all on the same line and isn't in the same or even similar style of font. It has been allowed to stay behind the picture because it is an easily read word which everyone knows and can easily identify with. This has also been done so that the image is more visually interactive because you have the main image layered upon the masthead, then layered on the image is all of the cover lines. The skyline above the masthead tells us more about what will be in the magazine, and why we should buy it. The cover lines are located in both the right and left thirds of the magazine so that it is very visible from wherever it may be placed, however they have stuck to good margins so this doesn't look cheap or tacky at all. A green and white theme has been used because they are very fresh colours which connotes to the reader the magazine will be also fresh and new, to a cliche this it would be a "Breath Of Fresh Air". The subject of the main image is obviously some one fairly well regarded in colleges, however he isn't the main sell point of the magazine because the article featured on him isn't sized up to the point that it is the most readable, its its only just bigger than the other cover lines. Flash is used in the right third as a paintball competition advert. This works well because it is using exactly what it is advertising and using the bright colour singularly means it gets noticed without looking garish. The bar code and price are located together so they are easy to find and don't encumber the image. the date however is in the skyline, because its a monthly magazine so therefore it just has to say September 2009, which is more stylish and used by more upper class magazines like Q or GQ.
Institution: The magazine has to represent a vibrant youth culture and has to relate to college students for it to be a magazine which is respected and bought by them. This institution has to represent the youth of today and not be back or outdated. It does this on the cover with bright colours and a main image which links into popular culture, as a lot of music is now created/performed by people like him.
Ideology:The idea of the magazine is to provide to college students information about their type of life, and be a social hive of a magazine with interaction and dedicated readers per month. We know that it does this because on one of the cover lines we can see "Thank God It's Friday" so we know that it focuses on the nightlife and student party life rather than work, making it a much more social magazine.
Audience: The audience would be any college students, but more the social ones rather than ones who can be deemed as 'geeky' as it focuses a lot on the sociability of being at college, for example the cover line "Why We Love Black Berry" showing that they are looking at sociability on campus, so buying this magazine does mean that you MUST have friends and be a social person.
Representation: The magazine represents students as being happy, engaged and ready to learn, however without not in a 'geeky' way as he's dressed fashionably but at the same time in a very smart manner. The books in his hand help to make sure it looks like he is still read to learn, but the chain and jewellery makes sure he is nor seen as a swot or nerd.
